Default Fallback Tag

For blocking clients, we offer an option to set a publisher's default fallback tag in the event an ad is blocked 3x in a row

With Boltive's blocking solution offering many different block types (ex: malicious, category, custom) and refresh options for other vendor blocks (ex: HAI, DV, MOAT), it's possible that one ad slot will see several blocks in a row. While we'd like to get to the root of this issue in the long run by addressing things like large custom blocklists or vendor blocks, the Default Fallback Tag option allows for the ad slot to not be empty in the event an ad is blocked and refreshed multiple times.

How It Works

  • After any Boltive block with the standard integration, we are able to refresh the slot via the GPT refreshSlot mechanism (for a refresher, more information can be found HERE)

  • An ad can be blocked 3x total in a row, with the standard block/refresh pattern happening 2x. On the third block in a row, the ad slot will remain blank until the standard page refresh (20-30 sec)

  • By supplying Boltive with a Default Fallback Tag, in the event there are three

blocks in a row, rather than having the ad slot be blank the default tag will serve

How To Enable

  • The client would send Boltive a tag that is compatible to support various sizes. When Boltive sets the Default Fallback Tag, we will replace %%WIDTH%% and %%HEIGHT%% with the ad iframe’s size.

FAQ's

Q: Can a 3rd party tag be used?

No, a pass back tag would be needed. It would be an ad unit the publisher would send Boltive the tag for

Q: Is there a reporting dimension or option for surfacing this fallback activity/delivery in GAM?

GAM would record the impression and the tag can contain any other tracking that is wanted
